Rock around the Blog

Entry 1466 posted in: The Holy Church of Iggy the Inuit

One of the lesser profane tasks of The Holy Church of Iggy the Inuit is to check the amount of iggybility on the World Wide Web and to act (or react) accordingly. As the one and only keeper of the true faith this means that in very grave situations the Holy Igquisition has to intervene.

The Holy Igquisition has found two cases of heretic Iggy websites and seriously considers excommunication of its makers. To read the Igquisition's report, please consult the full article: Rock around the Blog.

Entry 1468 posted in: 9. I, Pod

May. I'm sitting on a commuter train writing this post. The Evil That Men Do from Iron Maiden on the iPod. Life could be much worse.

Also in 2009 my iPod will be in autoplay mode and that for the second consecutive year. Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk, Pink Floyd followed by Marilyn Manson. Disposable Teens. Spoken about disposable indeed.

The results from past year, apart from the song ratings, have been reset on the database. Le Soleil Est Pres De Moi - Air (a track so beautiful it makes the rain disappear).

Every month a graph will be published here, the playlist of the month will appear on my MySpace blog and the overview of the year will be glued on my MySpace entrance page. Nothing to be excited about. U.F.Orb, The Orb (brother will you dance).

For those who still want to know the how and what and where and when I give you this old link: Random Blueß aka sucking for statistics

Mick Rock in Psychedelic Renegades:

Known only as Iggy, the half-Eskimo girl had momentarily made her way into Syd’s life, and flat, at the time when the (Madcap Laughs) photos were taken. Though not part of the original shoot plan, Iggy was an intriguing accomplice. With no job and little to call her own, Iggy epitomised the free natured spirit of the psychedelic underground.

The Holy Church of Iggy the Inuit is very proud to announce you 3 new Iggy galleries:
Street Life, black & white pictures of Iggy in front of Syd Barrett's house and car.
Bare Flat, colour pictures of Iggy, posing on the background in Syd's apartment.

Virtually Date Girls 1.1

Entry 1477 posted in: e. Adult Oriented Games

Chaotic, the man who gave us Virtually Date Crystal (VDC) made a new click’n point dating simulation called Virtually Date Girls (VDG).

The complete game should give you a choice between three different dates: Erica, Leilani and Kelly, as was the original intention with VDC as well, but for the moment only the Erica character is playable.

Basically this is an ArianeB clone but with slightly sloppier graphics. Like in his Crystal game the facial expressions are not always up to par and Chaotic should have a better eye for details. Somewhere in the game Erica wears a towel and when it accidentally drops down it looks like a hollow plastic tube and not as some cloth. In other places it looks like she is levitating instead of standing, sitting down, etc...

Probably Chaotic is impatient to publish his games but in some cases it is better to wait a little and to try to get everything right. Easier said than done of course, ArianeB is in its fifth generation and there are still some bugs inside.

Chaotic took some advice from the adult games community at Shark’s Lagoon and so VDG has now got a set of build-in parameters that will trigger (or not) different situations. One of the parameters is the inevitable alcohol intake and the gifts you can buy at several shops. You can visit several parts of the town ad infinitum and here the game is somewhat more flexible than ArianeB.

ArianeB uses javascript variables to store its data, VDG stacks them away in cookies, but this hasn’t always been a good idea. The game runs smoothly in Firefox but other browsers have given some undesirable results. ((I might add that it is not always that easy to make your html creations browser friendly, it took ArianeB 4 incarnations before its code was accepted by any other browser than Internet Explorer)

All html pages from VDG carry a code that make it impossible to return to the previous screen. In Chaotic’s previous game, Crystal, gameplay was pretty straightforward and one didn’t need javascript to end the game. Disabling the javascript feature in your browser allowed you to switch in between pages so you didn’t had to start all over again if you made a mistake.

This time it is different as javascript is needed to store (and load) the cookies. But there is still a way to get around the protection if you are playing an offline version loaded on your harddisk. All you have to do is to get rid of the lines that prevent the browser to do a step backwards.

The easiest thing to do is to download an utility that is able to search for a certain string inside a file and to replace it with something else. I found a freeware called Search And Replace at Nodesoft that has the ability to replace all text in between a starting and an ending point. I made it delete everything between string
<script LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT" type="text/javascript"> and </script>
and after a few seconds all 429 files that carried that code had been changed. (The only problem with the software is that it needs Microsoft . NET, but modern computers should have this on board.)

I have been asked by several people to make a walkthrough as I did for ArianeB and VD Crystal. I have to admit I am a bit reluctant. No time, no motivation, generally I am a bit tired of the adult sim genre (and just now I found out that ArianeB has been upgraded - again!).

Chaotic didn’t wait and he published some general rules for the game on his site. These help you and if you are really stuck you can always consult the VDG thread on Shark’s Lagoon.

ArianeB 5.8

Entry 1481 posted in: a. ArianeB

NEW: THE ARIANEB WALKTHROUGHS have now got their own domain:
http://arianeb.atagong.com

ArianeB 5.8 ArianeB, also known as Virtually Date Ariane or Ariane’s Dating Simulator Game and all other permutations of the words Ariane, virtual, dating, simulation and game (just trying to score a bit higher at Google here) has been upgraded to version 5.8.

This version has got 94 new (or updated) html pages and 66 new (or updated) images

The update was, according to its maker, necessary because there was a certain inconsistency in the previous ending scenarios:

In an effort to open up the ending a bit, if you do go to the kitchen after eating dessert (or swimming, or showering), Ariane will suggest what to do next based on what you have or haven’t done so far. You can accept or decline her recommendations, until she gets tired of your constant rejections, or she runs out of ideas, whichever comes first. (Taken from Life in the Metaverse.)

Parcheesi! One of the new options in ArianeB is to play a board game called Parcheesi, something I had never heard of before. Playing Parcheesi ends the simulation but not in the most stimulative way. The scenario can be triggered with Ariane wearing her red blouse, her blue bikini (see top pic) and her black evening dress

But the new version has got some pleasant surprises as well. The basketball best-of-three competition has been extended with a bikini variety, and those who are familiar with the situation know that ArianeB will sometimes attempt to take away your concentration. (More info: consult Meet, Greet and Meat.)

An even better surprise are the swing set and monkey bar acrobatics. Be sure that ArianeB is in evening dress and asks you to go for a walk in the park. It is a hell of a job anyway to to gymnastics in a tight black dress, if you catch my drift...

People who are already familiar with the simulation should now know how to get there. For the newbies I will try to make a quick walkthrough later on.

For those who are wondering how Ariane Brodie (or is it Ariane Barnes?) looks like in Second Life there is a gallery at Koinup showing some screenshots. Apparently Second Life (or OpenSim) is the only place to meet her in the flesh.

Leilani

Entry 1503 posted in: e. Adult Oriented Games

Leilani Virtual Date Girls has got a new 100 MB update. The new girl is called Leilani, but the release has been done rather in a hurry, not always a good sign, and several reports at Shark’s Lagoon already mention crashes and bugs. The good news however is that some previous bugs with the Erica character have been solved. Chaotic’s output is rather frantic and I’m pretty sure it will not take a long time before a bug fixing release will see the light of day.

At first sight, I haven’t played the game yet, it seems that the graphics have improved a lot although one can still see that vintage DAZ models have been used. Chaotic has tried to overcome some technical problems by releasing two different browser-dependant downloads: one for Firefox, another one for Internet Explorer. He goes in against the tide with this decision as most modern independent or open-source games nowadays try to be compatible with all current computer systems or browsers. Of course this is Chaotic’s decision but in my opinion this will only multiply the problems instead of diminishing them. Especially later on when extra girls, items and parameters will be added. A future version will probably implement a money parameter to go and buy things at the several shops in the game, for instance.

Leilani has got four endings so far. There were going to be five, but one had to be removed due to technical issues. Downloaders can have a sneak preview as several images in the package aren’t used in the game for the moment but will be implemented in a future release.

It is Chaotic’s ultimate wet dream to have 5 different dates for VDG and he is already thinking of VDG volume two. Chaotic’s method of work is so fast that he will probably get there at the end of this year and by the time that date 5 will have been released most bugs will have disappeared from the other versions.

Unfinished Projects will not make a VDG walkthrough but some hints and tips can be found on Chaotic’s site. Some walkthroughs are floating on the web as well. It is possible that I will post some of these, if the authors give me permission to publish them.

The make-a-Virtually-Date-Ariane-clone virus has struck another victim as well. Tictac announces The Life of Average Joe, but the project is still on the drawing table, as he (she?) would like to have: ‘ideas for the story, features, scenes, settings, models (anime too)’.

In the game, you control an "Average Joe" character, working at a big international IT company. The game will feature its own currency, profile and a save feature. While it will be point-and-click from a POV perspective, there will be consequences and the game will feature twists and turns as you progress, based on your previous decisions. It will feature many locations, one being the ability to go on vacations and so forth.

I’m not very sure it this program will ever see the light of day as Tictac is still looking for:
a skilled programmer or coder,
a skilled flash artist and
people fluent in French, German, Spanish to make the localised versions.

Feel free to react if you are interested to join the project.

The ArianeB 5.8 walkthroughs (1): Kitchen Talk

Entry 1510 posted in: a. ArianeB

NEW: THE ARIANEB WALKTHROUGHS have now got their own domain:
http://arianeb.atagong.com

Virtually Date Ariane (aka ArianeB aka Ariane Barnes aka Ariane Brodie) has been upgraded to version 5.8. Going to the kitchen after dessert (and after the chance to play the spin the bottle game) will make ArianeB consider what options are still open. She will then propose one of these and the player may agree or disagree.

If you don’t like ArianeB’s proposal she will think of another one, and another,… until she runs out of ideas and the game has got no more options left… and there is a rather big chance she will kick you out if you don’t go along with one of them. The programmer, whose identity is still harder to find than Osama Bin Laden’s nice little grotto, has extended a few situations and created an entirely new one.

Although I have played ArianeB a couple of hundred times now I am still baffled by the complexity of the game and the different situations that are created, not randomly, but as a result of previous decisions.

Warning: ArianeB is an 18+ game containing some virtual nudity. To put it in other words: if your mommy, church or government forbids you to look at pixels that may give you the illusion of nude female flesh you are advised not to play this simulation and to contemplate your fate of chastity and boredom. I will not visit you in prison and if you do get there I recommend you never to pick up the soap!

Update: the latest walkthroughs for the ArianeB 6.21 game can be found at: The ArianeB 6.21 walkthroughs: All in one

Shock the monkey! Second and more important warning: the first scenario has got no adult content whatsoever and is perfectly save to play when your wife is looking…

1. Introduction

I suppose that you are either playing the online game or that you have a downloaded copy on your disk. If the previous is Chinese to you (except when you are from China, isn’t this global village getting on your nerves?) or you don’t know what or where to start I hereby invite you to start reading the very first walkthrough that is still valid for the 5 series: The ArianeB Chronicles.

Introduce yourself.
Compliment her outfit.
Say something smart.
Kiss her cheek.

Before ArianeB goes on she wants to know how old you are... choose 18 or over (otherwise the game will end).

Turn on some music.
Jazz.
Kiss her while dancing.
Stop kissing.
Change music or dance again.
Soft Rock.
Kiss her while dancing.
Stop kissing.
Dip and kiss her neck. Kissing her neck too soon in the game will stop every action, but here it is quite safe to do.
Stop necking.
Go back to the couch.

2. Steak Dinner

Go to another room.
Kitchen.
Get wine to drink. This will put ArianeB in a good mood.
Finish drink.
Get steaks for dinner. They are in the fridge.
Drink wine. This will put ArianeB in an even better mood. Do not overdo the wine intake or else ArianeB will be dead drunk.
Finish drink.
Wait for the steaks.
Eat steak dinner.
Compliment her.
Talk to her.
Drink wine.
Go somewhere else.

Go to the kitchen for dessert. You could play spin the bottle, but for the moment the chocolate cake is all we’re after…
Eat dessert then go somewhere else.

3.1 Cheesy Parcheesi

Go for a drive.
Go for a drive.
Go downtown.
Go to the nightclub.
Go to bar. I'd like a martini, dry
I’m driving so club soda please. Good, you`re not drinking. I'd love another martini though. Ignore her last remark and...
Ask her to dance. Oooh yeah! Shake it baby, S-S-shake it!
Keep dancing.
Punch the guy.
Retreat before a fight breaks out.
Get out of the club. There are several ways to go home and just to annoy the rest of the world I pick the lamest one…

Go to home décor store.
Look around.
Vote for the right one.
Keep looking.
Vote for the left one.
Keep looking.
Vote for the right one.
Buy it and take it home.
Continue at home.

Go to the kitchen. Here is where version 5.8 kicks in...

We have had fun so far. I have an idea for what we should do next:
I got some board games in one of these cabinets, why don`t we play a game?

Say: OK, let’s do that.
Play Parcheesi.
Continue playing.

The Parcheesi game will randomly continue until someone wins.

The Parcheesi scenario can be triggered with Ariane wearing her red blouse, her blue bikini and her black evening dress so the above is not the only way to get there.

The Parcheesi ending is completely new in 5.8. Other situations have been changed and/or altered a bit: one of these the basketball game. How to get to the basketball game is decribed in a previous walkthrough, but because I’m in a good mood I’ll put it here as well…

3.2 Bikini Basket

Originally the basket scene only existed in the red blouse variety (check out walkthrough Meet, Greet and Meat), but version 5.8 has a bikini basketball scene as well.

Go ahead with the basic introduction (point 1 above) and the steak dinner (point 2 above). Have your dessert in the kitchen and…

Go to the bedroom to put on a swimsuit.
Wait for her in the hallway.
Go to the backyard. It may sound stupid but once outside we decide to…
Go back inside.
Go to the kitchen.

ArianeB proposes the following: Let`s get in my car and go for a drive downtown.
Ask if she has other ideas.
How about we take a walk to the park and do something there?
Say: OK, let’s do that.
Wait for her to put her shoes on.
Follow her to the park.
Try a shot. To make the first shot you need to hit inside the rectangle, consult the screenshot here.
Her turn to shoot.
Let her shoot.
Take your shot. To make the second shot you need to hit the basketball backboard exactly where the red spot is located (of course the original images in the game don’t show this).
Her turn to shoot.
Defend the basket.
Take your shot. To make the 3 point jumper you need to hit the basketball backboard exactly where the red spot is located (of course the original images in the game don’t show this).
Finish game.

Go back to her place. Back in ArianeB’s house all is open for discussion, but if you enter the kitchen she will propose the following:
We could sit on the bench out back and look at tonight’s beautiful sky. You can agree or…
Ask if she has other ideas.
You have seen my pool. Let`s go swimming. You can agree or…
Ask if she has other ideas.
We could go enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot tub?
Ask if she has other ideas.

If you disagree again she is out of options. I think this is a bug, as she will normally kick you out the house if you keep on refusing. You can have an extra drink (not a very good idea) or visit the rest of the house…

3.2.1 Basketball Patch (Download)

To win the basket challenge you have to hit the board at an exact (small) spot. Although winning or loosing has no further effect on the rest of the adventure I have created a basketball patch to make it easier not to miss.

A zipped file containing these hotspot locations can be downloaded here - if you replace the files in the /datingsimulator/images folder with the altered images you will never miss. (This patch also contains some images to win the stargazing contest.)

3.3 Monkey Business

Let’s get to the third new possibility in version 5.8. This is a variation on the gymnastic demonstration that has been described in Meet, Greet and Meat.

Say hello (chapter 1), have the steak dinner but SKIP the dessert in the kitchen after lunch (chapter 2)…

Go to the bedroom to put on a swimsuit.
Follow her into the bedroom.
Let her finish.
Go to the backyard.
Go swimming.
Jump in with her.
Swim some more.
Let’s get out of the pool.
Follow her out of the pool.
Go back inside.
Take a shower.
Follow her into the bathroom.
Wait for her to get out.
Take a shower.
Get dressed and go for a drive.
Follow her into the bedroom. The important thing is that she will not put on any underwear 8-)))
Let her finish dressing.
Go downtown.
Go downtown. Basically we have the same situation now as in the Parcheesi scenario, only this time ArianeB is wearing her black dress.
Go to the nightclub.
Go to bar. I'd like a martini, dry.
I’m driving so club soda please. Good, you`re not drinking. I'd love another martini though.
Ask her to dance. Oooh yeah! Shake it baby, S-S-shake it!
Keep dancing.
Protect Ariane.
Get her away from this guy.
Get out of the club. There are several ways to go home, here is another one…

Go to the art museum.
ArianeB will show you three paintings. The possible answers are: Bougereau - Cubism - Durer - Rembrandt - Renoir -Van Gogh.
Start tour.

Go back to her place.
Get liquor from kitchen. A small bug in the text as ArianeB will be holding a wine glass.
How about we take a walk to the park and do something there?
Say, OK let’s do that.
Wait for her to put her shoes on.
Follow her to the park. The girl on a swing scenario will proceed as has been described before, only now in a black dress. The black dress scenario contains a nice surprise though.

Take the other swing.
Done swinging.
Climb on top and hang upside down.
Ask her to show her gymnastic skills.
Tell her she is doing well anyways.
I don’t mind at all.
Wow! That is pretty good.
Applaud.
Follow her back to her place.

3.4 Moon at night

Why don't we end with the stargazing quiz?

Go to the backyard.
Sit and look at the stars.

ArianeB will ask you to point some interstellar objects for her. The stargazing quiz has been described in a previous walkthrough (Fast Food, Fast Games, Fast Girls...) but you don't need to read that again if you have downloaded the ArianeB basketball patch. It also contains the answers to the stargazing quiz. Or you can click the following image links:
here are the moon regions...
here are the stars..
If you win the stargazing quiz ArianeB proposes to take off her clothes or to go to the shop to buy some beer...

Do you want me to take my dress off?
Let her undress.
Kiss her.
Stop kissing.
Go back inside.
Go to the livingroom.
Kiss her.
Stop kissing.
Massage her shoulders.
Stop massaging shoulders.
Touch her breasts.
Stop fondling.
Kiss her nipples.
Stop.
Massage her back.
Quit rubbing.
Grab her butt.
Quit massaging.
Touch her pussy.

And so it goes…

Andy Hughes (1965 - 2009): gone to Orblivion

Entry 1512 posted in: 4. Orb Weavers

Put your head phones on to cover the sound of the bullets
Close your eyes not to see the children dying
Stop breathing to avoid the fumes
Escape with The Orb into a wonder land
Where no one dies...
Trash, To Nat Or Not To Nat, e-mail, 2003-04-10.

The sad news started sipping in on Tuesday and wasn't immediate denied, nor confirmed by those who have a direct telephone line with The Orb, always a bad sign.

Andy Hughes, band member from 1995 to 2001, had died from cancer. Following the true Orbian tradition of general clumsiness the webmaster of the official MySpace page had attempted to publish a press release but had failed completely, leaving visitors and fans speculating what was hiding behind the empty blog post. At the same time all the official webpage would show was that it was updating ad infinitum. Someone found a YouTube comment, from a few days before, written by a family member, with the message that Hughes only had a few hours left to live. So apparently this was for real….

Andy Hughes started to work with the band as an engineer (Live 93, Pomme Fritz, FFWD) and joined the collective - calling The Orb a band is a bit weird as members come and go with every album – on Orbus Terrarum (1995), as the de facto replacement for Kris ‘Trash’ Weston who had left the group in rather mysterious circumstances. Perhaps it is better to say that Trash had huge problems with LX Paterson, Andy Hughes and the rest of the world in general.

Although Orbus Terrarum was a far better album than its loony predecessor Pomme Fritz, and the even weirder Robert Fripp sidestep FFWD, it wasn't the album the Top-Of-The-Pops public, nor the record company was waiting for. It does contain the heavenly Oxbow Lakes though, a track I will be eternally grateful for.

Hughes artistic input on Orbus Terrarum was limited to two tracks (besides producing and engineering) put this would soon change. Orblivion (1997) was (and still is) a small masterpiece and set the sound of The Orb for the late nineties. Fans from the Trash years found the album a sellout but personally I still think it holds better than the multi-million seller U.F.Orb. Andy shared writing credits on all tracks minus one. Orblivion sold quite well and its single Toxygene reached #4 in the UK.

Then came the Cydonia disaster, the album was recorded, but not released by Island (the record company was in the middle of a restructuring operation). A second master lead to the same result and when the third, partially revised, version finally hit the record stores in 2001, 20th-century Orb was outdated, old-fashioned and literally a millennium behind. Fans and would-be buyers had already downloaded or bought bootleg copies of the previous (unreleased) versions anyway, much to the anger of LX Paterson who blaimed Andy to have leaked the masters to the public. As a result Hughes left the band, somewhere between version one and three, but several tracks still carry his mark.

Actually Cydonia isn’t all that bad. Hughes was particularly proud of A Mile Long Lump Of Lard, one of the 7 tracks he co-wrote and that I have described on this blog as the best Orb track they made in ages. Another chef d’oeuvre on the album is Terminus in the fine ambient tradition of the band.

This could have been the end of this obituary but Hughes appeared, quite unexpected, in 2007 on what is still the most recent Orb studio album, The Dream. That album, and I’m really ashamed now to admit that I haven’t got a clue how it sounds, was the first without Thomas Fehlmann in ages, but had some old friends returning to The Orb roots: Youth, Steve Hillage, Aki Omori (who was on Cydonia as well), Greg Hunter, the Corpral,… Andy Hughes appears at the mixing console on two tracks: Vuja De and Dirty Disco Dub.

Andy Hughes, an electronic music producer and DJ best know for his work with The Orb, passed away Friday, June 12th after a short illness. During the last few days of his life, he was cared for by the staff of the Liver Intensive Care Unit at Kings College Hospital in London. Andy’s parents have requested that if you would like to make a donation to charity in memory of Andy, his life and his work, then please use this page to donate to the Kings College Hospital Charity.

Andy Hughes mystery track

Gel-Sol, who is present on The Orb mailing group for as long as I can remember, found an unreleased Andy Hughes track in his collection.

I don't have much info on this track, let alone a name. For all I know, this track was unreleased, and was intended for a future em:t records compilation (em:t folded shortly after this, most likely for picking up shit bands like Gel-Sol and 302 Acid. ;P).
I was visiting the UK in the summer of '05 when Matt Hall of em:t records played this for me. I believe he said the track was unfinished, but I had to have it! Either way, this mix sounds quite good.
ENJOY!

You are free to download the mystery track in question and if you find it good enough to pay for it you are hereby invited to donate something at Kings College Hospital Charity.
